Abstract: Clean energy and vehicular electrification are strategic development directions globally, especially in China. The market performance of new energy vehicles (NEV) and electric powertrains is reviewed through production and sales data in China. The emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and PM2.5 related materials are compared between internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and electric vehicles (EV), which shows EV emits less CO2 and poison gas & microparticles for the same grade vehicles by the life cycle assessment (LCA).

Traction electric motors and power electronic drives are called electric machine system, which has decisive impacts on energy consumption for HEV, PHEV and BEV etc. Different electric powertrains and the energy consumption of their corresponding vehicles are compared. The induction motors (IM) and interior permanent magnet (IPM) motors for the application of e-powertrains for NEVs are discussed. This presentation is focused on IPM motor and silicon carbide (SiC) inverters as well as industrial chains like motor parts, power electronic devices and their materials, etc. High efficiency, more compact, low NVH, safety, and comfortability as well as the high ratio of performance to cost are composite requirements, which drive the integration of e-motor, power electronics and speed reducer, transmission. The design and optimization of the entire e-drive system, subassembly, and key components all rely on algorithms and software, especially numerical simulation, which are briefed in the presentation. The conclusions and useful suggestions are given finally for academic and industrial reference.
