Abstract: Magnetic gearboxes perform the same function as mechanical gearboxes, transforming mechanical power between high-torque, low-speed rotation and low-torque, high-speed rotation, but magnetic gearboxes employ magnetic fields, instead of interlocking teeth. Thus, magnetic gearboxes have a plethora of potential advantages, including reduced acoustic noise, reduced maintenance, inherent overload protection, and improved efficiency, due to their non-contact operation. Magnetically geared machines integrate an electric machine with a magnetic gearbox to yield a single, compact package that can be used in place of a direct-drive machine. Magnetic gearboxes and magnetically geared machines have been proposed for a wide variety of transportation applications, including electric and hybrid electric vehicles, ships, aircraft, and extraterrestrial rovers. During this webinar, we will describe the most relevant magnetic gearbox and magnetically geared machine topologies and explain and illustrate their operating principles. Then, we will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of magnetic gearboxes in general and of the various topologies. Next, we will present key lessons learned from our experience designing, prototyping, and testing magnetic gears. Finally, we will present our perspective on the suitability of magnetic gearboxes and magnetically geared machines for various transportation applications and what further work must be done for magnetic gearboxes to provide a compelling value in these applications.
